What a terrible day to be literate

My apologies in advance to everyone who can comprehend the English language for what you’re about to read.

Bruno Mars appeared in Roblox’s user-created Steal a Brainrot mode last weekend, and, according to official data, roughly 12.7 million players showed up to see him perform his new single.

I’m starting to reconsider my entire career after typing that out.

From what I can tell, the first site to spot this news was Dexerto. In fact, they published this story directly after Bruno Mars’ virtual concert took place, even though this is the first time I’m learning of it. Am I so out of touch? No, it's the children who are wrong.

Sorry, I just realised that those of you over the age of 12 might need some further context here. For starters, what's a “Steal a Brainrot,” you may ask?

It’s, from what I’ve been able to gather, the most popular mode in Roblox right now. It’s based on the AI-generated nightmare fuel Italian Brainrot meme craze. What’s Italian Brainrot? Trust me, don’t ask.

Either way, the meme is clearly popular enough with kids that Bruno Mars, who has won 16 Grammy Awards and sold over 120 million albums by the way, deemed it necessary to perform his new single, titled I Just Might, within Steal a Brainrot.

To clarify, the actual, real Bruno Mars showed up to sing his new song in the mode. Fortnite has proved several times that virtual concerts are a huge thing, but I’m still baffled by this story.

Clearly, however, whoever is in charge of Bruno Mars’ PR team is a genius, because charting data from the RoMonitor site indeed confirms that roughly 12.7 million people showed up to watch him perform. Don’t worry if you missed it though, because it’s been uploaded online for everyone to, um, enjoy.

Unfortunately, you’ve missed your chance to claim the “Brunito Marsito” Brainrot virtual collectable, which could only be snagged by witnessing the event firsthand. I wish I could unlearn every single piece of information I had to research for this article.

Look, I’m not seriously making fun of the kids who are engaging in this. I used to like dumb stuff when I was young, too. Also, my job revolves around playing video games, so I’m not exactly a leading authority on the topic of maturity.

It’s just… this might be the first time in my adult life that I’ve truly, genuinely felt that I’ve become too old to relate to young folks. Now, if you’ll excuse me, I need to go do something adult, like mowing my garden or doing my taxes.
