Resident Evil meets Manhunt in brutal new horror

This new horror game is channelling some dark inspiration

While so many of us desperately want Rockstar Games to return to the Manhunt franchise, it’s incredibly unlikely, despite the boon in popularity of the horror genre.

Those days of hardcore violence and horror haven’t quite slipped away if Butcher’s Creek is anything to go by.

Horror fans are eagerly awaiting the remake of Silent Hill 2 and a return to the town of nightmares

Available on Steam later this year, Butcher’s Creek emulates that retro 1990s vibe of VHS and fuzzy TVs all while playing out a slice of horror action that could come from Blumhouse themselves.

You play as a “troubled loner with a hunger for cinematic gore” who discovers a bunch of snuff VHS cassettes that lead him to the titular Butcher’s Creek.

What starts as something exploratory soon devolves into a night of violence when he’s kidnapped and attacked by a bunch of sadistic killers.

In this position, what would you do? Well, if you’re this loner, you’re picking up a box cutter or a hammer and taking revenge.

This is pure horror and full of creepy ideas, such as photographing the murder scenes in order to replenish your health, and revelling in gore as each kill gets more brutal.

I’m not sure even Rockstar Games went this far, but it’s clear their Manhunt games play a big part in the inspiration for this game.

Using a ‘found footage’ style for the first-person perspective only adds to the horror. Anyone who has watched really good found footage films knows the fear only increases when the technique is used.

There’s not much to see on the game’s Steam page aside from some screenshots that depict the environments pretty well.

The old-school feeling will play right into the hands of horror junkies looking for their next fix, I should know, I’m one of them.

Whether the execution works, we’ll have to wait and see, but it has a killer concept I can’t wait to try.
