Red Dead Redemption players divided over Jack Marston's real father

Did players really need to drag this up?

If you’ve played Red Dead Redemption, then you’ll know that Jack Marston is the son of John Marston.

And yet, all these years later, that’s a widely agreed upon fact that some fans are now calling into question.

Why? Well, Jack’s mother Abigail is revealed within the game to have once worked as a prostitute - via other characters’ dialogue - so some players have questioned how Abigail could be certain that John is truly the father.

Personally, I think this is all nonsense.

There’s a lovely little indicator called timing. Abigail was with John and John only when she fell pregnant.

That’s pretty much all of the proof that you need.

Dragging up her history of sex work, something that in this instance was perhaps more of a necessity than a choice, also feels like a bit of a low blow if you ask me.

The hullabaloo was kicked off by Reddit user Jasslike-Release-918 who wrote, “Is Jack really John’s son? I know Abigail is a great woman and deserves Jack. But I read that she used to be a prostitute.”

They continued, “And after the gang rescues her, she gets involved with most of the gang members sexually. Then she falls in love with John, gives birth to his son and they get married. However, how do we know Jack is really John's son?”

“The answer is simple, it's John. John is Jack's Father,” countered natalaMaer.

“Even if somehow John isn't Jack's father, John is the one who raises him, sacrifices his life for him, and Jack calls him ‘father’. That is what a father should do, and it's more than enough to show he really is Jack's father,” they finished.

“At the end of the day it doesn't really matter. John takes care of Jack as a father,” added Ihendehaver.

I’m perhaps painting the comments section as far more civilised than it truly is.

There are plenty of users using the game’s dialogue as evidence against John as Jack’s father but it all feels a little but dehumanising of Abigail, and I don’t really like that.

If the game tells us that John is Jack’s father, then that is simply how it is. This is a debate best put to rest.
