Red Dead Redemption 2's Bayou is the scariest non horror location in gaming

Red Dead Redemption 2's Bayou is the scariest non horror location in gaming according to fans.

Despite Halloween being just around the corner, not all of us are the biggest fans of horror games. However, there is just something about game locations with an unsettling atmosphere that gives you the creeps without technically being horror. That is the case for the Bayou areas of Red Dead Redemption 2, according to some fans.

Set in a reimagining of 1890s America, Red Dead Redemption 2 has a pretty sizeable map. Covering the towns and cities to the giant lakes, the Rockstar title has every kind of environmental setting. One area in particular, known as the Bayou Nwa, is a location found in the Lemoyne territory of the game. Surrounding the city of Saint Denis, it is dotted with swamps and home to murderous crocodiles and equally murderous people.

Although there are quite a few missions and secrets to find in this area, doing so will require you to keep your eyes open at all times as the swamps are home to the Night Folk. The Night Folk are a strange clan of zombie-like humans that can communicate without speaking and can seemingly lay disturbing traps according to one Reddit post.

“Bayou Nwa is the horror part of this game,” wrote the original poster on r/reddeadredemption. “I was riding from Saint Denis to Rhodes, when I heard clicking noises from the bushes and saw this corpse, and three Night Folk attacking me. I've met Night Folk before, even did the stranger mission 'A Fine Night for It', but I was looking for them on purpose then. It's much scarier when I encounter them randomly. I don't remember other non-horror games that scared me as much as RDR2.”

Another user seemed to agree when they wrote, “Such a beautiful part of the game... during the day.” One fan hopes these areas will inspire Rockstar to create a horror game in the future. “Honestly, I really wish Rockstar would make a game that was spooky and horror based. The feeling of the creepy RDR2 moments are amazing, I would love a full game with those vibes. Such a wasted opportunity that they didn't make an Undead Nightmare expansion in this world. Maybe we'll get lucky and they'll make a full game like it someday.”

It would be amazing to see Rockstar try their hand at an all-out horror game but with the studio reportedly at work on Grand Theft Auto VI, we may be waiting a while.
