New Horizon Game Announced Alongside PlayStation VR2

Virtual Reality gaming is set to get even better very soon, with eye tracking, in-built vibrations and more.

Damn kids with their technology. Oculus Rift this, PlayStation VR that. If PS VR is that good, why don’t they make a PS VR2? Wait, hang on…

So, yeah, that’s one way to kick of 2022. And yes, that’s actually its name - the PlayStation VR2, alongside a new VR controller, the PlayStation VR2 Sense controller. It keeps things simple, I suppose?

While you're here, be sure to check out some of our favourite VR moments below.

PS VR2 promises to enable a greater sense of immersion, allowing players to feel a heightened range of sensations. It adds a “true next-gen experience”, with a high-fidelity visual experience, 4K visuals, a 110-degree field of view, foveated rendering, an OLED display and more. It also boasts eye tracking, which will allow players to simply look in a specific direction to give an input to their game character.

Alongside headset-based controller tracking, which uses embedded cameras to keep track of both you and your controller, the new sensory features really sound like they’re going to take things to the next level. As well as incorporating 3D audio, the new ‘headset feedback’ uses a built-in motor with vibrations, allowing players to feel things like a character’s pulse, or objects flying past their head.

With all these exciting new features, all that’s left is to have a good game to try them with, and luckily, Guerrilla and Firesprite Games have us covered. A brand new Horizon game, Horizon Call of the Mountain, is being built from the ground up specifically for PS VR2, and although the teaser shown was incredibly short, it looks amazing.

While not much has been revealed about the game yet, we do know that it’s going to tell a whole new story through the eyes of an entirely new character, who will be revealed soon. Apparently, the protagonist will meet Aloy and other familiar faces, as well as brand new characters.

The release dates for the PS VR2, the VR2 Sense controller, and Horizon Call of the Mountain have yet to be announced, so we’ll just have to stay tuned. The new tech doesn’t currently have a price tag, either, so you might want to potentially brace yourself for that - nothing that uses the phrase “foveated rendering” is ever going to come cheap.
