The Matrix Is Coming To PlayStation 5

The Matrix Is Coming To PlayStation 5

"Red pill or blue pill?" becomes "cross or X?"

The Matrix Awakens is a new PlayStation 5 project that has been discovered in the PlayStation Network’s database, and it’s thought that it will be unveiled officially during The Game Awards 2021.

There are hardly any details attached to the entry aside from the title and that it’s been developed in Unreal Engine 5. We’ve gotten a glimpse at what Unreal Engine 5 is capable of, from Oblivion recreations to rendering three million crabs all at the same time, so this is exciting and encouraging news. The Matrix Resurrections is slated to be a soft reboot for the franchise so it’s possible that this project, whatever form it will take, will tie into the world that is being reconstructed for fans of the sci-fi series.

Here's the trailer for the upcoming movie!

One avenue that The Matrix Awakens could carve out is an interactive space for players to visit, like the Kid A Mnesia exhibition from Radiohead. Or, it’s a VR experience, as Sony has drummed up development for its subsidiaries that specialise in virtual reality. A perfect time for this project to be shown off is at The Game Awards 2021 where host Geoff Keighley has promised that 40-50 games will be featured along with a slew of new arrivals.

Resurrections co-writer David Mitchell (not that one) revealed that there is more to this movie than meets the eye and it's riffing off its history with a novel interpretation of the themes. "It's certainly not yet one more sequel, but something autonomous that contains however the three Matrix that preceded in a really ingenious way. It's a very beautiful and weird creation," said Mitchell. Being "beautiful and weird" is what we should all aim for, so count us well and truly in.

While Keanu Reeves, Carrie-Anne Moss, and Jada Pinkett Smith reprise their roles in the retelling, Laurence Fishburne is notably missing from the line-up. Morpheus will be played by Yahya Abdul-Mateen II and theories are already rife on the whys and wherefores that this character has been recast. Here's one for you - that isn't Morpheus. It's a reconstruction that the Bugs are using to lull the heroes into a false sense of security, as Morpheus acted to protect The One and ensure their downfall.
