Sony Interactive Entertainment has decided to continue production on the PlayStation 4 as a result of the ongoing PlayStation 5 supply issues.

Since launching back in 2020, the PS5 has been plagued by supply chain problems stemming from a semiconductor shortage. Unfortunately, it seems this issue won't be resolved in the near future, meaning a new-gen PlayStation will remain frustratingly difficult to secure.

In a new report by Bloomberg, it's claimed that Sony has now committed to extending PS4 production throughout 2022. The company had previously planned to stop making the last-gen console last year. but the PS5 shortage has scuppered those intentions.

It's believed that around one million additional PS4 units will be created this year, with the intention being to relieve the pressure on ongoing PS5 production. Obviously the vast majority of those reading this won't be interested in securing a PS4 and would much rather have a PS5, but Bloomberg notes this increased production will help Sony work out better deals with manufacturing partners.

A Sony spokesperson later confirmed PS4 production will indeed continue in 2022: “It is one of the best-selling consoles ever and there is always crossover between generations,” the company stated.

Takeshi Kamebuchi, a director in charge of semiconductors Toshiba, told Bloomberg last year: "The supply of chips will remain very tight until at least September next year. In some cases, we may find some customers not being fully served until 2023."

Maybe don't expect a PS5 anytime soon, then.
