Earlier this week we reported that there's been a wonderful trend of gamers using the PlayStation 5 launch to propose to their partners. We've seen multiple accounts of lovestruck PlayStation fans excitedly sharing pictures of their new console and their shiny new engagement rings.
It's been a wonderful time, and we're all very happy for these newly engaged gamers and their new consoles. I'm a little jealous, to be honest. Not of the engagement, to be clear, I'm happily married. I'm just still waiting for my PlayStation 5.
Of course nobody can really do anything on the internet without it being misconstrued or taken the piss out of a little bit, and so it is in this case. Many of the proposal announcements feature little more than someone holding out their ring in front of the PS5, making it look for all the world like they've either proposed or about to propose to the console itself. It's an impulse I get, believe me, but I don't think it would be a healthy relationship.

Needless to say, Sony felt it was time to step in and clear up any confusion by confirming once and for all that you can't marry your PS5. I mean, I guess you could find a way to symbolically do so if you really wanted to, but I'm not sure that you could get such a union recognised in the eyes of the law. Not in the UK, anyway.
Sony's PSA on PlayStation marriage proposals actually carries the exact same energy as a warning issued by Microsoft last week. You might remember that a number of fake reports of smoke coming out of Xbox Series X consoles. This, it turned out, was actually being caused by internet pranksters blowing vape smoke into the bottom of their units and sharing the videos online.

This was obviously such an amazingly stupid thing to do that Microsoft had to come out and warn people not to do it, because we clearly live in a world where people will do anything for a bit of internet clout - including risking screwing up their new £500 console.
So to recap: Do not blow vape smoke into your Xbox Series X, and do not attempt to marry your PS5. And vice versa, probably.
