Sony Has Shifted 9 Million PlayStation 5 Consoles Since Launch, But You Still Can't Get One

Given the state of the semiconductor shortages, this is very impressive.

According to a recent report, the PlayStation 5 has sold an estimated nine million units since its bombastic launch in late 2020.

That's an astonishing shift for an eight month stint. For comparison, the PlayStation 5 is closing in on the lifetime sales of the Sega Dreamcast and Sega Saturn, which pushed 9.13 million and 9.26 million units respectively.

Even though it's essentially a sparkly tech showcase for the PlayStation 5, Astro's Playroom captured our hearts here at GAMINGbible. Mark called its use of the DualSense "next-level stuff" as it places you front and centre of the exciting adventure. Check out some of the nods to the greatest games on the platform in the little game below.

The PS5's next target is the Nintendo Wii U, which has sold 13.56 million units, and then it will be hot on the heels of the original Xbox, which sold a pleasingly round 24 million units between 2001 to 2009. Of course, it must be mentioned that these gadgets weren't contending with a severe semiconductor shortage when they were on the block, and this factor is likely to have constrained the success of the PlayStation 5 to a degree.

"There is a new level of demand that can't be kept up with, everyone is in crisis and it is getting worse," explained analyst Neil Campling, and the issue is affecting a whole swathe of industries, from automotives to home appliances to video game, and even the companies that sell electronic dog-washing booths. Yeah, I didn't know that was a thing either.

VGChartz claims that, between May 30 and June 5, there were almost 200,000 sales of the PlayStation 5 across the globe. As a result, the PlayStation 5 has accrued over nine million sales since November 2020. Right now, I hear Sony ordering a balloon arch and popping the champagne bottles. Honestly, the slowly increasing volume of impressive first-party titles for the console may have been a contributor to its success. Demon's Souls got a cracking nine out of ten from Mark in his review as he praised the efforts of Bluepoint that have remade an already amazing game into something truly magnificent.

Imogen Mellor was ever so excited to get her mitts on Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart and it did not disappoint. "The gorgeous environments, cheesy dialogue and buttery smooth transitions from gunplay to cutscenes is nothing but a marvel," she said, comparing the experience to being the protagonist in a Pixar movie. And, one for the bravest and most patient of gamers among us, Returnal got two thumbs up from Ewan who called it a "gripping, often deeply disturbing adventure" in the darkest recesses of space.

Recently, the PlayStation 5 has thrown its users for a loop with a curious notification about one of its peripheral doodads. In short: surprised that the DualSense requires frequent charges to keep it topped up? That might not be the case.
