PlayStation Plus and PlayStation Now members are seeing red following the latest crossover of monthly free games between the subscriptions.
To the uninitiated, the two services actually offer particular packages depending on how you like to play. Costing £7 a month, PlayStation Plus allows players to play online, upload saves to 100GB of cloud storage, automatically download system software updates and game patches, and add new PlayStation 4 games to their libraries.
In November, the offerings were Bugsnax, Hollow Knight Voidheart Edition, and Middle-earth: Shadow of War. December is treating players to Worms Rumble, Just Cause 4, and Rocket Arena. These belong to the user for as long as they are a member of PS Plus, so you are able to accrue quite the collection over time.

On the other hand, PlayStation Now offers players the key to a collection of over 700 PlayStation 4, PlayStation 3 and PlayStation 2 games, for a monthly fee of £9. Furthermore, PS Now is the only way that PlayStation exclusives like Bloodborne or Uncharted are playable on PC. Nifty. There's a mind-boggling range of genres included in the collection, from F1 2020, the old God of War games, Heavy Rain, I Am Bread, the Killzone games, Limbo, the Metro series... the list really does go on and on.
Now, with both services refreshed with new titles on a monthly schedule, it was inevitable that PS Plus and PS Now would have to offer the same games at the same time. Of course, PS Plus and PS Now allow access to these games as long as the membership is active, so it would lead to a number of games being available to both camps. Ergo, if you'd signed up for both PS Plus and PS Now, you wouldn't actually gain a new game for either one if the offerings match up. It's a little annoying. However, it turns out that, in six months, a third of the games offered in PS Plus were already a part of PS Now.
These were PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds, Street Fighter V, Vampyr, Middle-Earth: Shadow of War, and Hollow Knight. PS Now fans also had a reason to kick up a fuss. Friday the 13th: The Game and Broforce were recently added to the collection, even though they had been a part of PS Plus this year (thanks Push Square for searching the archives on that one). All in all, there was a three-month stretch where PS Now and PS Plus members were surprised with the same games, which ended in this month, fortunately.

"I've said this for years. PS Plus is unnecessary, argued one commenter. "Drop it and give the discounts and being able to play all games online to PS Now."
"It's getting old," another agreed. "They really need to combine these services already."

This is an inevitable situation, as PS Now has such a large number of titles in its collection that PS Plus was bound to cross over with it at some point. But, one wouldn't expect that trend to be maintained for three months on the trot, and that doesn't mean people aren't annoyed. Thankfully, there is a simple solution: new games. As new games are announced, produced, and released, then the possibilities grow! And, hey, you might even be introduced to a genre you would never have tried otherwise.
