PlayStation Creator "Can't See The Point" In Metaverse Or VR Headsets

The creator told Bloomberg that he thinks VR headsets are "simply annoying", and doesn't see the point in the metaverse, either.

You know what, it’s 2022, and I really can’t decide whether VR has flopped or not. I mean, there’s definitely an audience for it, don’t get me wrong, but at the same time, it’s not exactly transformed the way we play games, and it doesn’t really seem like it’s going to take over as the way to do so any time soon - it’s generally more of a neat add-on at best.

Anyway, if you’re not personally into it, you’re not the only one. The original creator of PlayStation, Ken Kutaragi, has said he can’t even see the point in VR at all. He believes things like headsets, which take you out of the real world, are “annoying”.

While you're here, be sure to check out some of our favourite moments from VR gaming below.

“Headsets would isolate you from the real world, and I can’t agree with that,” Kutaragi said to Bloomberg. “Headsets are simply annoying.”

He then went on to discuss his thoughts on the metaverse, which as you might expect, aren’t exactly positive either: “Being in the real world is very important, but the metaverse is about making quasi-real in the virtual world, and I can’t see the point of doing it,” he said. “You would rather be a polished avatar instead of your real self? That’s essentially no different from anonymous message-board sites.”

Honestly, I can’t say that I disagree with that part, especially given the astronomical costs that some people are prepared to pay just to kit themselves out with stuff that literally only exists in a digital capacity. Just go dress up your Bitmoji, or something.

It goes without saying that Kuturagi probably isn’t too impressed by this month’s announcement of the new upcoming PlayStation VR device, which is very simply titled PlayStation VR2. It promises to enable a greater sense of immersion, allowing players to feel a heightened range of sensations, adding a “true next-gen experience”, and introducing eye tracking. It’s still a headset though, so it’s almost certainly not got his approval.

There’s no current release date or price, but it’s set to release alongside a new PS VR2 Sense Controller. It’s also been confirmed that a VR Horizon game, Horizon Call of the Mountain, is on its way, built from the ground up specifically for the new device. So that's neat! We'll have to stay tuned for more info on that.
