DOOM Eternal has finally released its new-gen upgrade - and it's totally free.

DOOM Eternal has finally received a fantastic new-gen upgrade, and it’s free to download for all those who own the game.

If you’ve yet to play DOOM Eternal, it is truly a fantastic game. In our review, we wrote, “DOOM Eternal is a much more complex game than its predecessor. At its heart is the same trick of locking you in a room with a horde from hell and leaving you to spin through your weapons, firing off plasma, rockets, and lead into the monsters until all that's left of them are guts and rib cages. But around that violent core are lots of new systems that complicate the combat.” The franchise recently celebrated its 30th anniversary, a huge milestone, and to celebrate, DOOM Eternal’s new-gen upgrade has finally landed, giving the game a fresh lick of paint.

Take a look at DOOM Eternal in action below.

As I mentioned, the new-gen upgrade is totally free - a blessed relief seeing as many games have charged $10 for such a thing in recent years. That being said, you do need to own the game. The good news is that if you don’t, DOOM Eternal is included in PlayStation Plus’ Extra tier and it’s on Xbox Game Pass so you can nab it from either of those platforms if you’re a subscriber.

Worry not, existing players. You can transfer your save if moving from a PS4 to PS5, or Xbox One to Series X/S. The game now boasts a Performance Mode, Balanced Mode, and Ray Tracing Mode. As reported by Gfinity, on PS5, Performance runs at 120fps with 1584p resolution, followed by Balanced’s 60fps at 2160p, and Ray Tracing’s 60fps at 1800p.

For the Xbox Series X, Performance Mode runs at 120fps with 1800p. Balanced and Ray Tracing perform at the same level as the PS5. On the slightly less powerful Series S, Performance Mode runs at 120fps with 1080p, Balanced sits at 60fps with 1440p, while Ray Tracing Mode is unavailable.
