Red Dead Redemption free remaster brings huge overhaul to graphics and gameplay

Red Dead Redemption players can now download a free community-developed remaster which makes big changes to graphics and gameplay.

As one of Rockstar Games’ best releases of all time, we’re not saying that Red Dead Redemption needs much to improve upon. But sometimes, a few touch ups here and there can go a long way.

Developed by modder BadassBaboon, Reality Redemption is a new mod that aims to revamp almost every aspect of the original Red Dead Redemption.

According to them, the mod “aims to improve the visual fidelity of this game with better textures, models, and weather cycles, fixing continuity errors, as well as improving its gameplay elements for a more fluid and realistic experience.”

BadassBaboon says that while Red Dead Redemption is “one of the best Western titles ever created,” its age has led to “various gameplay and visual elements feeling outdated and not up to today's gaming standards.”

That’s where Reality Redemption comes in, improving visual clarity, fixing continuity errors, and touching up gameplay details for a better experience.

Putting this into more detail, some of the changes made by the mod include adding more than 300 prop textures, along with improvements to various vegetation and grass textures. This also extends to textures for animals and vehicles like horses, carriages, and steam engines.

These improvements also extend to 2D images, such as bringing enhanced loading screens and minimap textures to be more lore accurate and higher res.

Snow has also been added to the level of detail textures. As you may know, snow doesn’t appear too much in the original Red Dead Redemption, only relegated to the Tall Trees location in West Elizabeth. But it’s nice to see this get an inclusion.

Moving on to gameplay improvements, the mod has added an optional white Arabian horse that can be used as a war horse. An option to disable all forced weathers at locations such as Thieves Landing and Tall Trees has also been included.

AI has been significantly changed as well, with improvements detailed across the board. Horses can now detect enemies independently, and bears will also charge at you.

Finally, some miscellaneous changes are made to how the camera works, with better FOV and positioning, with unique angles which are context-dependent. Now, the camera changes depending on if you’re on foot, riding a horse, or in combat.

Altogether, it’s a pretty chunky mod for fans of the original game to check out. The changes aren’t too dramatic, but what it’s doing under the hood makes it rather interesting for those doing a repeat playthrough.

And on higher resolutions especially like 4K, the game should look even more gorgeous than it did before.
