Although Sony has no plans for any new entries in its “major” franchises this year, we may still see a less high-profile IP make a return for a sequel.

After recent years being full to the brim with entries from some of our favourite major franchises such as God of War and Spider-Man, 2024 is set to be more of a laid back year according to a recent announcement by Sony. With PlayStation 5 hardware sales expected to “gradually decline” and no plans to release any major titles between April 2024 and March 2025, Sony will be taking a back seat it seems.

However, all is not lost thanks to a report by Giant Bomb reporter Jeff Grubb who claims that Sony may be planning to release some previously unannounced games, albeit ones that are slightly less high-profile IPs.

“We already know Rise of the Ronin is coming, we know that Concord, one of the live service games, is scheduled to come out this year. That’s the stuff that’s scheduled for sure,” he said. “And then it’s like, there might be new game entries in franchises that already exist, they just might not be major in PlayStation’s eyes when they’re talking to investors. They said God of War, they said Spider-Man, these are the franchises that sell 15 million copies lifetime or more.”

However, it seems like one underdog title may be making a return in 2024. “I’ve heard maybe Astro does happen this year, so if that happens, that’s pretty big for me,” Grubb said. “I get why Sony’s not thinking that’s a major one for us, at least not yet, hopefully they could turn it into a major one and then a lot of this changes around.”

The 3D platformer, Astro’s Playroom was released in 2020 and came pre-loaded on every PlayStation 5 and marked the most recent entry in the series. Before then, Astro Bot: Rescue Mission was released in 2018 for the PlayStation VR. With a substantial fanbase, it will be interesting to see if the rumours for 2024 turn out to be true.
