Xbox users finally have a permanent solution to one of modern gaming’s biggest problems, the dreaded stick drift.
Every gamer has been hit with this curse at some point or other. It makes itself known in the most frustrating of ways like your aim being slightly off in a first-person shooter, or your car veering off to the side in a racing game like Forza Horizon 6.
Sometimes you can fix the problem with a bit of rubbing alcohol and a cotton swab, but oftentimes the problem is internal and requires you to delve deeper.
Don’t go throwing away your faulty Xbox controllers yet though. You can save money and extend its lifespan with what’s being described as a “historic breakthrough” by console and controller technician Modyfikator89 on X.
After a lot of work, tech-savvy users have unlocked something known as “unpatchable calibration,” and it’ll soon be available as free software you can use yourself.

Modyfikator89 said, “We have unlocked ultimate manual and automatic joystick calibration for any Xbox Controller. It is UNPATCHABLE and PERMANENT written directly into the controller's memory forever. It cannot block this.”
This breakthrough is over two years in the making and will apparently make problems like stick drift a thing of the past. It can be achieved with both Xbox and PlayStation controllers and has been described as a game changer for both repair shops and players.
The software will work with just about any controller too, whether they be “wired, wireless, and all board revisions, with zero exceptions.”
However it’s worth pointing out that this targets official Xbox controllers. It’s believed third-party controllers could be supported in the future but Xbox’s own brand of controllers has been the focus for the last couple of years.
It’s an impressive achievement and one that’s been sorely needed. Manufacturers have addressed problems like stick drift for years but done very little about it, and we all know why.
When your controller develops a fault you either have to send it back to the company you bought it off for repair or replacement, or throw it away and buy a brand-new one. Either way companies like Xbox and PlayStation win.
Third-party repair shops are a solid alternative but they, of course, come with their own risks, and you’re ultimately still paying to have it fixed.
DriftGuard intends to fix that problem and video tutorials for less tech-savvy Xbox owners will be published after it has launched.
With any luck you’ll never have to deal with your controller drifting again, so you can put it through hell with all of the games you play with peace of mind that it’s always repairable should it develop a fault.
