Xbox Freebie Is a Fallout: New Vegas Spiritual Successor

This Xbox freebie is not to be missed and can be considered as a spiritual successor to Fallout: New Vegas.

The post-apocalyptic series, Fallout, from Bethesda Softworks, is without question one of the most popular RPGs in its genre. In fact, long before Bethesda released its first game, Fallout 3 in 2008, the series had already amassed a huge player base.

However, when Fallout 3 did grace us with its presence, for the first time in the series, we had a fully 3D world to explore that gave us the choice of switching between third-person and first-person perspectives on the fly. In my humble opinion, Fallout 3 is the best game in the series.

That being said, I would say, despite its very glitchy launch, Fallout 3 is closely followed by 2010’s Fallout: New Vegas. In fact, many others would say that this is the best game in the series, and that would be a fair argument.

The success and popularity of Fallout: New Vegas was perhaps somewhat surprising, given the fact that it initially began its life as an expansion to Fallout 3, before morphing into a standalone game.

Since 2010, Fallout: New Vegas fans have been calling for a sequel, but at the time of writing, that dream doesn't appear to be coming to fruition anytime soon. The best we could probably hope for is a Fallout: New Vegas remaster, as well as a Fallout 3 remaster.

While we wait to see if any of these remasters become a reality, you might want to check out 2019’s The Outer Worlds, developed by Obsidian Entertainment. A game considered to be a Fallout: New Vegas spiritual successor, and it’s from the same developers.

However, given that The Outer Worlds was released six years ago, you might want to check out its sequel next week, and best of all, it’s available with an Xbox Game Pass Ultimate subscription at no extra cost.

In our review of The Outer Worlds 2, GAMINGbible’s James said: “It’s immersive, delightful fun, and it’s packed with little moments that should see it resonate with a big audience. Whatever Obsidian decides to do next, they should look back on this release as one where they really got all the big calls right.”

“My review on The Outer Worlds 2 will be up shortly, but in my opinion, if Fallout: New Vegas is your favourite Fallout game, you need to play The Outer Worlds 2,” tweeted JuiceHead33.

“The Outer Worlds 2 is a good old-fashioned single-player, open-world RPG in the same vein as Dragon Age, Fallout, and Avowed,” said IGN.

“The Outer Worlds 2 is a confidently made game. It is perfectly scoped, with excellent gameplay, writing, and voice acting. The combat and movement are the biggest step up over the original,” wrote XboxEra.

“The Outer Worlds 2 is for better and worse still fluffy gaming comfort food, but it is significantly improved and better than its predecessor in almost every way,” said Eurogamer.

The Outer Worlds 2 will be released on PC, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S on 29 October 2025.
