Xbox Game Pass is getting one of the best remakes in recent years which will no doubt be great news to subscribers of the green brand.

Released in 2020, developed by Hanger 13 and published by 2K, Mafia: Definitive Edition is a remake built from the ground up of the original game that was first released on PC in 2002, followed by PlayStation 2 and Xbox in 2004. The remake has new story missions, improved visuals and gameplay, an original score and more.

“Rise through the ranks of the Mafia during the Prohibition era of organised crime,” reads the synopsis of Mafia: Definitive Edition. “After a run-in with the mob, cab driver Tommy Angelo is thrust into a deadly underworld. Initially uneasy about falling in with the Salieri crime family, Tommy soon finds that the rewards are too big to ignore.”

Scoring a respectable 78 on the aggregate website Metacritic, Mafia: Definitive Edition has been met with positive reviews such as GamingTrend which said: “Hangar 13 has retouched every single aspect of the original Mafia, expanding the story, refining the gameplay, and wrapping it with an absolutely phenomenal new look and sound.”

Destructoid said: “All this time, the first Mafia was the best of the trio. It just took a phenomenal effort from Hangar 13 to do it justice with Mafia: Definitive Edition. This feels like the rare necessary remake that elevates and builds upon the original.”

If you’re a fan of the movies, Godfather, Goodfellas and Once Upon a Time in America, then Mafia: Definitive Edition will surely be your cup of tea. So, if for whatever reason you’ve never played this game and you’re a subscriber to Xbox Game Pass, you can play the remake from 13 August 2024.

Mafia: Definitive Edition is out now on PC, PlayStation and Xbox.
