It’s now Halo’s turn to poke fun at Sony, following the extremely controversial decision to ditch physical media on PlayStation by 2028.

Earlier this week, the folks at Sony PlayStation announced plans to ditch delivering games on a disc by January 2028, with its sights set on an all-digital future. As you can rightly imagine, this decision has gone down like a lead balloon with the video game community as a whole.

Just hours after Sony PlayStation’s controversial announcement, reports began making the social media rounds that Microsoft is also exploring avenues to go all digital for its next-gen console that’s currently dubbed Project Helix.

Since that announcement, social media channels outside of the video game realm, such as Domino’s Pizza and KFC, have also been taking jabs at Sony PlayStation. But now one a little closer to home has joined the fight, that being the aforementioned Halo.

However, there was a genuine purpose to the social media post from the official Halo X account (formerly Twitter), because just in case anyone had concerns following this week's controversy, it’s been reconfirmed that the upcoming remake, Halo: Campaign Evolved, will ship digitally and on disc.

In a Q&A linked in the tweet, asking the question as to whether Halo: Campaign Evolved will be available in its physical form, the reply read: “Yes! Buying the Xbox or PlayStation version of Halo: Campaign Evolved at your local retailer will result in getting the physical game case and disc so that you have tangible items to add to your collection.”

Halo Fans React to the Social Media Post

“But will the damn game actually be ON the discs? FULLY on them?” asked Reddit user CrimsonGear80, to which Perfect_Exercise_232 replied, “No. Xbox discs are 50gb I believe.”

On X, DoesItPlay1 said in response to the tweet, “We heard the game requires a mandatory download AND a Microsoft account to play, even on PlayStation. Makes the physical disc kinda pointless, don't you think?”

“Bang on. They are just hustling, trying to sling an empty disc with a license on it,” added GameLifeCrisis. “Although it is slightly better than a code in a box, as you can still sell it after you're done playing it.”

While I agree that it’s better to have Halo: Campaign Evolved on disc, it does beg the question whether the game is actually playable for the first time without an internet connection. I guess we’ll find out for sure when the game launches in a few weeks from now.

Halo: Campaign Evolved will be released worldwide on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S on 28 July 2026, or five days earlier for those who pre-order the Premium or Collector’s Edition.
