Fallout fans that have always wanted to run their own Vault-Tec sanctuary can now do so with this new Steam freebie.

Last week we covered Hackinal, a small game made by a Fallout fan which recreates the games’ hacking minigames as a fully-fledged title.

Now, it looks like we’re getting a management sim game that recreates the feeling of being a Vault Overseer in a Fallout-esque wasteland.

Okay, so that already exists in Fallout: Shelter, which is kind of cool.

But that game is now over ten years old, and I’d be keen to see what a modern game can achieve.

The “underground apocalypse vault management simulator” genre is admittedly fairly niche, but considering how loved the Fallout series is, I’m surprised we don’t get more of these kinds of games.

Underchoice Is Fallout Shelter Meets Papers, Please

Underchoice by TG Indie is exactly this kind of experience, putting you in the role of a vault overseer who must take responsibility for the people inhabiting your bunker.

For whatever reason, the outside world has become uninhabitable, leading survivors to seek sanctuary at your bunker.

It’s up to you to make important choices that will affect the fate of everyone in your bunker.

This includes deciding whether to save or reject these survivors, share resources with them or deny them, and whether you can trust them.

From here, it becomes more of a Papers, Please style game with a Fallout flavour.

I mean, even look at the design of the vault doors. It’s a pretty uncanny similarity.

There are a load of unique events that can occur while you play, making each playthrough pretty tense as you try not to make any mistakes.

If you’d like to try Underchoice out, the demo is now available to play on Steam.

You’ll be able to play a small chunk of the beginning of the game, which should help to convince you of the full game when it eventually releases.

Underchoice was first revealed last month, and has quickly become something we’re keeping an eye on.

The Fallout series is so vast, after all, and there have been plenty of ways it’s inspired game developers to create their own take on the themes it puts forward.

As for if there’s a release date of the full thing, TG Indie has not announced anything yet. The listing on Steam simply states it’s “coming soon”, so I guess we’ll just have to wait and see.
