The Last of Us fans will adore this hit free Steam offering

FEDRA, is that you?

The Last of Us fans might want to check out this upcoming Steam game for free.

The Last of Us is, without question, one of the most popular PlayStation franchises over the last decade, ever since developers Naughty Dog released the first game in 2013 on the PS3.

Since that time, The Last of Us has grown more popular than ever, in part due to the success of the HBO TV series, which is currently in its second season with events inspired by 2020’s The Last of Us Part II.

Check out the Quarantine Zone: The Last Check trailer!

Just in case you’ve never played The Last of Us series (for whatever reason), a deadly virus has plagued our planet, turning infected humans into ravenous, zombie-like creatures.

However, what sets The Last of Us apart from most zombie games is that it plays on the real-life Cordyceps fungus that quite literally takes control of its host.

Thankfully, Cordyceps is not able to take control of humans (at least not yet), but Naughty Dog explores that ‘what if?’ scenario in The Last of Us.

In the game, FEDRA (Federal Disaster Response Agency), a US government agency sets up quarantine zones in the hope of containing the virus, but let’s just say, it goes a bit tits up.

While FEDRA is explored a bit more in the HBO series, we don’t learn much about the government agency in The Last of Us video games, as the series mostly explores the aftereffects of the apocalypse.

However, we can perhaps have the next best thing by playing out a FEDRA-like scenario in the upcoming indie game Quarantine Zone: The Last Check, developed and published by Brigada Games.

“‘Papers, Please’ meets zombie apocalypse. Command the last blockade, inspect survivors, and decide their fate: trust, quarantine, or liquidate,” reads the synopsis of the game on Steam. “Expand your base, upgrade defences, and fend off hordes. Every step shapes humanity’s survival. Your choice matters, and every mistake costs a life.”

According to a press release, it looks like Quarantine Zone: The Last Check is already proving to be somewhat of a hit, and it’s not even out yet.

The press release claims that Quarantine Zone: The Last Check has received over 200,000 wishlists on Steam in just five days. According to Steamdb, it’s in 152nd place in the wishlist charts.

The press release also claims that Quarantine Zone: The Last Check has over 50 million combined views across YouTube and TikTok.

With that being said, we’ll have a good idea whether Quarantine Zone: The Last Check lives up to its hype when its free playable demo arrives on Steam on 22 May 2025.

The full release of Quarantine Zone: The Last Check is planned to arrive this coming September on PC.
