Steam is inching closer and closer to its next hardware launch, which is shaping up to be a major turning point for the company.
While Steam has dominated the digital gaming space for years now it's never been a competitor for PlayStation or Xbox in terms of hardware.
Attempts have been made in the past to bring the comfort of your Steam library to your living room to varying degrees of success, and by far the most successful has been the Steam Deck.
Now Valve is preparing for the launch of the Steam Machine, which aims to deliver a console-like gaming experience but using your PC gaming library. While it’ll work with Steam Valve has said it can be repurposed for any operating system.
At the time of writing, the Steam Machine is expected to launch sometime around Summer 2026.

Adding credibility to this is a leak saying Valve Corporation in the United States has recently received a shipment of “wireless PC controllers,” which many believe to be Steam Controllers.
The Steam Controller is Valve’s second attempt at making a wireless controller for PC users, as the first wasn’t received too well.
This second iteration certainly looks the part though, and given how the Steam Machine is meant to simulate a home console experience, it’ll no doubt benefit from a comfortable controller.

The Steam Machine is also confirmed to come with one of these controllers, so for Valve Corporation to receive a new shipment, it implies the company is gearing up for that Summer 2026 release date.

The biggest hurdle the Steam Machine is facing at the moment is: Who is it actually for?
It’s a question many gamers have been asking more than how much it costs, as for those who already own high-end PCs, it wouldn’t make much sense to downgrade to weaker hardware just to play on a TV. You can plug a Steam Deck into your TV with an adaptor if you want that kind of experience.
From the look of things, the Steam Machine is meant for those who want to step into the world of PC gaming without spending a fortune on the setup.
It has plug-and-play appeal to it, and while it’ll probably cost a decent amount to buy, it likely won’t be nearly as expensive as the PlayStation 6 and next Xbox.
So if you’re interested in buying a Steam Machine at launch, you should get saving now, as Summer 2026 is quickly approaching.
