Steam users prepare for battle, as it’s time to experience a grimdark sci-fi universe completely free-of-charge all weekend.

For gamers on Steam as well as Xbox and PlayStation a free trial of one of last year’s most epic titles is now underway.

Warhammer 40k: Space Marine 2 is a game near and dear to my own heart as it got me back into the miniature hobby after a long, long hiatus.

The game continues the story of Captain Titus from the first game, Warhammer 40k: Space Marine, which you don’t need to play by any means but if you have Xbox Game Pass you can do so at no additional cost.

Titus has been busy for the last decade serving his Emperor and enduring penance for a crime he didn’t actually commit, but now he’s back on the front lines with two new battle brothers on a quest to prevent another galactic calamity.

From 16 October to 20 October you’ll be able to have a glimpse into the main story as well as take on some multiplayer missions as your very own customisable space marine, and the best part is you can play with friends.

Warhammer 40k: Space Marine 2 supports up to three players in both the story mode and PvE multiplayer, with a PvP mode that lets honoured brothers join the fun.

No prior knowledge of the Warhammer 40k universe is needed either. While I did like the hobby many years ago I never really dived into the lore, and obviously a lot has changed over the years so all of it was brand-new to me. Despite this the story is easy to follow and if you are a fan of Warhammer 40k it just means you’ll notice little story beats and details that’ll reward you for your knowledge.

As I said this game is near and dear to my heart but it did pull me back into a very expensive and time-consuming hobby, so be warned…

An added bonus comes in the form of some special rewards to be earned for taking part in the trial, which once unlocked will be usable in the full game should you decide it’s your cup of tea.

Whether you’re on Steam, Xbox, PlayStation or somewhere in-between with the Xbox ROG Ally, Warhammer 40k: Space Marine 2 is an incredible third-person shooter that deserves your attention, especially while it’s free-to-play.
