Steam has become the home of great games for PC players, offering everything from AAA releases for the biggest franchises, to indie gems that otherwise wouldn't stand a chance on the open market.

A big part of that legacy is the access to free games in one form or another, whether that be for the full thing, a demo or limited time alpha and beta playtests.

One such game has debuted onto the store that is currently allowing players to enjoy this early stage in its development for free, and it looks like a really interesting prospect for action RPG fans.

The Longest Tale is an Ambitious Project

Check out the Steam page for The Longest Tale and you'll see a combination of very pretty screenshots, fast-paced videos and shiny trailers that make the whole thing look pretty exciting. In even better news, digging down into the project only reveals just how ambitious it actually is, and it's absolutely one to keep an eye on.

In the developer's own words, the game is "a story lost to time, traces of it etched in the land".

"Navigate a world in conflict where three enigmatic civilisations guard the secrets of their broken past. Hunt for clues and piece together the fragments as you roam through wondrous ancient realms. Friends and foes alike await in these mythic expanses. Outsmart otherworldly entities and consort with legendary heroes."

The setup of the game is quite interesting, with the player changing to a new hero each time they progress beyond an overall level. There are four in total, and each hero has their own quests to work through, which in turn weaves together the full narrative by the time you're finished with the last one.

They've gone for a mysterious vibe for the game world, with artifacts and ruins all over the place for you to pick over. Combat is all based around timing and precision, rewarding tactical thinking over brute force and button mashing.

There is also adaptive progression, with the world changing based on the decisions you make and how the story plays out, so there should be some replayability there.

Though there is no release date at all just yet, you don't have to wait if you want to give it a try. The developer is currently running a playtest, that does require approval but applications remain open. To give it a go, you simply need to give the green button a click on the game's store page on Steam.
