It’s hard to stand out and produce a game nowadays, especially if you’re a developer entering into the free-to-play market, as there are so many other vying for attention.
So when a new free game lands on Steam, it needs to be something special to retain the initial players, and keep them coming back, ready to part with their money for microtransactions, or create a new cultural icon.
You’d perhaps look at Summoners War: RUSH, and think it would be a slam dunk; it’s got the anime visuals made so popular in the past decade, and it leans into the idle tower defence genre that is still pulling in fans.
Sadly, that’s not the case here, as players have been reporting issues and poor design choices through the Steam review system, bringing the game’s rating to a ‘Mixed’ verdict.

“Nothing unique at all, mechanics all copied from bunch of idle games that are like all same and there's like 1000s of them atm all looking like this game so nothing new at all,” says one player.
Another factor here for those leaving a thumbs down, is the reliance on adverts that bestow boons and perks for players, something pulled from the mobile gaming space, which many believe has no right to exist on PC.
One player took to the reviews to say simply, “please make a server for Steam and remove ads rewards system.”
And this came after playing for over 14 hours, leaving them wanting much more from the game.

While there aren’t many more reviews that go into why they left a thumbs down, the rating shows that many are not impressed, or expected more.
Though ‘Mixed’ doesn’t mean downright awful, and one review does lean into a much more positive experience, saying it’s “A fast-paced spin on the classic franchise, focusing on quick battles.”
