Steam drops free download for game that will absolutely consume your life

Goodbye social life

Steam drops a free download for a classic game that may signal the end of our social lives.

There have been many games over the years that have consumed our lives, perhaps much more than they should have. Games such as Skyrim, The Witcher 3 and World of Warcraft have taken away ungodly hours from fans.

Sure, being cooped up indoors, obsessed with a video game, isn't the most healthy of scenarios, but when a good game has us hooked, we’re pretty much lost causes at that point.

Steam is currently running its ‘Automation’ promotion, and until 21 July 2025, it’s all about robotics, sci-fi and construction. During that time, plenty of games will be discounted and free playable demos will be brought to our attention.

One such game is the indie title developed and published by Wube Software LTD called Factorio, and you can download and play its free demo right now.

“Factorio is a game about building and creating automated factories to produce items of increasing complexity, within an infinite 2D world,” reads the synopsis of the game on Steam.

“Use your imagination to design your factory, combine simple elements into ingenious structures, and finally protect it from the creatures who don't really like you.”

On the aggregate website Metacritic, Factorio has an impressive score of 90 from critics and 8.9 from users. What’s more, its Steam review rating is “Overwhelmingly Positive”.

“I don't know how I've never left a review for this game. Guess I've been too busy playing for 1,800 hours. This game is damn near perfection,” wrote Steam user quigonquinn.

“Factorio is life,” said Mr. Angry Eyes.

“There's a reason why everyone on the reviews has 500+ hours! This game is just supremely fun!” exclaimed Karoll.

Just in case it’s of interest, Factorio is available on Nintendo Switch, and it also has a free playable demo on the eShop.
