Steam free FPS launches to rave reviews: 'great time killer'

This demo has rapidly proven a hit

With Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 and Oblivion Remastered both having recently launched, many of us are a little slammed for time.

If you do have space for something else in your currently-playing line-up though, you may want to check out Mycopunk, a co-op FPS that’s just launched a hugely popular free demo on Steam.

Developed by Pigeons at Play and published by Devolver Digital, Mycopunk thrusts players into the New Atlas Hazard Crew ‘Boot Camp’ where they’ll prepare to fight a fungal threat.

As I said, this is a demo, so you’ll only be able to attempt the game’s first “two explosive missions”, but that’s an experience that is not to be missed judging by the response to this free release.

“A ragtag squad of robot rejects are hired by the SAXON corporation and given one last shot at profitable glory (and avoiding the scrap heap),” the synopsis teases.

“They are the New Atlas Hazard Crew, a ramshackle squad of exterminators sent to uncover the mysteries behind a planet-wide fungal catastrophe.”

You can view the game in action below.

Despite launching just a few days ago, Mycopunk’s demo has already garnered a ‘Very Positive’ review score on Steam.

“Very very cool game/demo that feels like a combination of two games I've played personally. Roboquest and Deep Rock Galactic,” wrote one player.

“Overall, very enjoyable and a great time killer,” added another.

“A lot of content for a demo. Very promising game, simple and fun. Can't wait to try out the new weapons and upgrades that are added as time goes on,” read another review, with a further example adding, “I’ve only seen this game for 10 minutes but it f**ks severely.”

All very high praise.

As for when you can hope to play the full game, nothing is confirmed beyond the vague window of 2025.

There’s also no word on its pricing but this game is being published by Devolver which tends to dabble in the mid-range market so I wouldn’t expect it to cost an arm and a leg.

Devolver, for example, published both Neva and The Plucky Squire in recent months which launched at RRPs of $20 and $30, respectively.

For now though, enjoy that free demo everyone is raving about.
