Skyrim meets Final Fantasy in massive free Steam download

A new Steam free download looks like an incredible get for classic RPG fans.

Blending the likes of Skyrim and Final Fantasy, Vindictus: Defying Fate now has a free demo available to play over on Steam.

It’s an action-RPG and a continuation of the Vindictus series. The game features souls-like combat, where you use a mix of fast dodges, heavy attacks, and powerful counters to defeat enemies.

There’s also some dungeon-crawling and exploration available, lending itself well to the games that influenced it before.

Now, Nexon has released an alpha test for Vindictus: Defying Fate, giving you an early taste of the game and what it has to offer.

The alpha test runs until 17th June, so you have some time to jump in and check the game out if you’re interested.

Although the full game doesn’t have a release date yet, note that progress from the alpha test will be reset when it eventually launches.

Players who have already checked it out are a little divided on the game, though. The test has a 46% positive score rating on Steam, indicating a “Mixed” reception.

One positive review on the Steam page reads: “Vindictus: Dying Fate is definitely worth playing for anyone who's a fan of the franchise in general, and likely a fun time for anyone who hasn't even heard of it.”

Another positive review stated that it was “so far, so good, but only time will tell. I recommend it, but with caution.”

They cited no loot boxes and fair RNG as a reason to play.

However, other reviews have also given the alpha test a thumbs down, indicating that they do not recommend it.

“It's good to be back in Vindictus, but it feels like the same old 201x game I used to play and this is not enough to bring the players in,” wrote one review.

Players are also reporting performance issues, even on high-end PCs.

This is expected for an alpha test, where performance is sure to be improved in the final release, but it can be frustrating for those who were excited about checking the demo out.

Vindictus: Defying Fate has no release date attached to it yet, but we're sure it won't be far off.
