These days, so many horrors rely on realism to pull off their scares.

But once upon a time, polygonal spooks had the ability to make us all jump out of our skin.

What if I told you that the old ways are back? Fans of the OG Resident Evil are going to want to keep an eye on the upcoming Fear The Spotlight.

Developed by Cozy Game Pals (it’s not cosy) and set to be published by Blumhouse Games, Fear The Spotlight finally announced its launch date during Sony’s most recent State of Play.

Taking inspiration from the PS1 era, Fear The Spotlight is a third-person horror adventure that sees players attempt to solve a mystery.

“Sneak into school after hours with Vivian and Amy, survive a séance gone wrong, solve tactile puzzles, and, whatever you do, stay out of the spotlight,” the synopsis teases.

Essentially, following the séance, Vivian ends up alone and must locate her friend without being found by a monster which roams the school’s halls.

Within this maze of classrooms, Vivian unearths a decades old tragedy that seemingly continues to haunt the school today.

ICYMI: Ghost of Yōtei was also unveiled during the State of Play. Take a look below.

You’ll have to stealthily sneak through the various corridors, solve puzzles that “pay homage to classic genre favourites”, all while using your flashlight, screwdriver, wrench and more to survive.

Developers describe the game as an ode to classic 90s teen horror, and that’s clear to see. It looks like a truly fantastic game.

A free demo is already available on Steam and has garnered a stellar review score of 98% from players.

They praise the demo’s voice acting, attention to detail, accessibility to the horror genre, and story.

The full game is set to land on Steam, Nintendo Switch, as well as PlayStation and Xbox consoles on 22 October - just in time for Halloween.
