Steam is a great place to go if you’re looking to game on a budget. You can find some great deals and offers on the industry’s latest releases, but that’s not what I’m going to highlight today.

You can also discover plenty of indie delights on Steam, many of them hosting free demos so that you can be sure a game is for you before you make a purchase.

Yes, it’s fun staying up to date with the latest AAA launches, but so too is it when you stumble across something that wasn’t really on anybody’s radar. Just think of how Lethal Company skyrocketed up Steam’s charts.

The demo I’m going to highlight today is perfect for those of you who may enjoy survivalist narratives like those found in the Fallout and The Last of Us franchises, although this title is understandably not quite on the same scale.

Developed by Rab-Bit, The Parasites is an upcoming open world survival horror that sees you assume the role of a survivor following the fall of a giant meteorite.

The meteorite doesn’t simply decimate civilization, so too does it bring an invasive species of parasites to planet Earth.

Amazon Prime’s Fallout TV show drops this week. We sat down with the cast to play snog, marry, irradiate.

“The Parasites is an open-world survival horror set in an abandoned corner, after the fall of a giant meteorite,” the synopsis reads.

“You are one of those lucky enough to survive the infection. Every time you try to go beyond the catastrophe, you somehow come back. Your task is to survive and get out of this trap. As time goes by, loneliness and the itch of the parasite begins to put more and more pressure not only on your body, but also on your psyche – can you survive in this nightmare?”

There's no point waiting for help. All you have is a parasite that you have learned to coexist with. By chance, he rewarded you with superhuman strength and survival. Using this, you will have to learn on the go, build shelters, improve your character, create traps, make tools and weapons for hunting and self-defense.”

It’s certainly an intriguing premise. What’s perhaps most impressive is that The Parasites is being created by one solo developer.

Whilst it doesn’t have a release date just yet, there is a free demo available on Steam to sample now to give you an idea of what to expect from the full release.
