Portal fans will adore Steam's latest free download

We have Portal at home

This brand new free download on Steam is reminding me an awful lot of Portal, mostly because, uh… well, it’s pretty much just Portal. Legally distinct Portal. Portal at home. Portal wearing a moustache.

Reincarnation, a "first-person platformer game" from developer Micrative on Steam, just got a brand new demo you can try out for yourself right now.

It's very clearly inspired by Valve's game

So, when I say this looks a lot like Portal, you can probably get a pretty good idea of what I’m talking about just by watching the trailer. Instead of “portals”, in Reincarnation you set up “mirrors” that allow you to jump between two different places… y’know, like in Portal.

You know what really gives away the Portal influences though? The fact that the dev for the game just straight up bloody says it in the Steam description.

“It's a first-person platformer puzzle game similar to Portal, with a rich story, a suspenseful atmosphere, and a bit of a thriller”, writes developer Micrative on Reincarnation’s Steam page.

“In the game, the mirror is a door that allows you to move through two Spaces that mirror each other. You will gain the ability to open mirrors and use that ability to solve puzzles. In the process, you can read and experience a dark story.”

Now to be absolutely fair to the dev, I think they’re kind of underselling the coolest part of this game by going all in on the Portal comparisons.

The visuals and the creepy, ethereal looking setting really paints a kind of unsettling vibe here. It reminds me a lot of some of FromSoftware’s earlier horror titles, like their Echo Night games.

That being said, hey, if you throw in some cool portal-hopping puzzle nonsense alongside all that, I’m in. I just hope the story is as suitably creepy these trailers have led me to believe…
