When you think of RPGs, your mind perhaps drifts to sprawling, photorealistic open-worlds as that’s what’s become the genre’s standard.
That’s merely just one type of RPG though, and it’s certainly a far cry from the genre’s more humble origins.
An RPG isn’t defined by a particular size or art style; it’s simply a game that focuses on skill progression, player freedom, and a strong narrative.
That’s precisely what’s on offer in 2D animated release Edentopia, a charming upcoming RPG which has recently dropped a free demo on PC storefront Steam.

Edentopia is set within an open-world, but it has the cosy charm and scale of classic The Legend of Zelda releases of yesteryear.
While very little has been said about the game’s story, Edentopia sees players dropped into a fantasy realm where they’ll have to fend off foes, upgrade their weapons, and establish a base as they seek to consistently level up.
“An open-world sandbox RPG where every weapon transforms how you fight. Hunt monsters, craft gear from their materials, and shape your build through stats, enchantment, spells, and pets,” begins the description from developer Space Petal Studio.
“Explore freely, challenge bosses at your own pace, and carve your own path through a world of magic and discovery.”
You’ll get to utilise an array of weapons, including swords and bows, whilst also making use of alchemy-based spellcasting.
The more you explore and train, the more spells you’ll unlock to use against any enemies, including ferocious bosses dotted around the game’s open-world.
There’s a character customisation suite so that you can tailor the game’s hero to your liking, plus Edentopia features a destructible battlefield.

It’s certainly not the first game to boast such a feature but it’s always nice to see devs put in the effort to add something in that really boosts immersion for the player.
Devs describe Edentopia’s world as “huge”, and you’ll want to explore as much of it as possible if you’re to work your way through unlocking the game’s progression crafting tree.
The terrain is described as “transformable”, although devs haven’t yet gone into much detail about what that means.
It’s teased that the player can set up a farm as well as “structures and decorations”, so there’s perhaps a cosy base-building element to what this RPG has to offer.
Edentopia is currently only due to land on PC via Steam which is where you can try out that free demo I mentioned ahead of the game’s launch in Q3 of 2026.
That refers to July to September, so Edentopia’s launch isn’t too far off if the devs don’t subject it to a delay, of course.
There’s no review consensus yet for this one but it looks really delightful, with its 2D animated art style likely to lure plenty of players in the coming days.
