Half-Life Meets Fallout in Impressive FPS You Shouldn't Miss

The 1990s are back in vogue, thank god

The boomer-shooter genre is still booming, because this upcoming narrative FPS is already making waves online.

Contrary to the lovingly assigned tongue-in-cheek nickname, boomer shooters have arguably never been more popular than they are now.

If you’re unfamiliar with the genre, the definition of a boomer shooter is simultaneously straightforward and yet also somewhat obtuse. Essentially, they’re first-person shooters in the style of the classics, such as the original 1993 release of DOOM and Quake II.

The genre focuses on speed, hipfiring, exploration and, usually, the classic 90s video game aesthetic, but honestly, you could just argue that if it looks like DOOM and plays like DOOM, it qualifies as a boomer-shooter.

Well… unless it’s a modern DOOM game. Then, ironically, it wouldn’t qualify as a boomer-shooter.

However, one thing you argue that the boomer-shooter genre rarely focuses on is a compelling narrative, but developer and publisher Mygind Mathorne are seemingly trying to buck that trend with their upcoming game Skarven.

If you’ve ever wanted to play something that looked like a mix of Half-Life and Fallout, wrapped up in a beautiful-looking pixel art package, then this newly announced Steam game might be one to keep on your radar in 2026.

Skarven is a duo-developed project from animator Bo Mathorne and developer Thomas Mygind, which explains the odd choice of dev name, with art direction and story inspired by Danish history and folklore.

It also looks absolutely gorgeous, although the “botanical abominations and a fanatical militant cult” featured in its story likely won’t do much for Danish tourism.

For now, there’s not much we know about Skarven beyond the details listed on its newly released Steam page.

If you were hoping for a concrete release date, your only option at this point in time is to wishlist the game and hope for an update in the near future.

Likewise, I can’t find any details about potential Xbox, PlayStation or Nintendo ports of the game, so this one may end up being a PC-exclusive.

On the plus side, Mathorne and Mygind have revealed that Skarven has been in development since 2024, so at least we can confidently say that the game is well into development at this point in time.

Hopefully, we hear some more about this one in the near future, but I have a sneaking suspicion that the next time we hear about Skarven, it’ll be when it's actually close to release.
