The Fallout universe already has its fair share of horrors but when you add The Last of Us-inspired mutated creatures to the mix, things will get a whole lot more horrific.

Well, that is exactly what Guàishòu has done.

It has combined the exploration of Fallout with the horror elements of The Last of Us to bring us an action-adventure side-scroller from developers Apophenia 23.

Better yet? It is free to check out now courtesy of a free Steam demo.

Guàishòu will see players explore an abandoned city filled with grotesque mutants and mysteries. As a result, you will need to use your lumen rifle as both a tool and a weapon in order to discover what actually lurks in the dark.

In this atmospheric 2D side-scroller, you will have to navigate a derelict post-apocalyptic industrial environment overgrown by jungle and inhabited by mutants who want nothing more than to stop you in your tracks.

All you have in your arsenal is a lumen rifle in the Guàishòu demo as you explore the opening moments of the game which introduce you to the game’s mechanics and lore.

The full game has not yet received a release date but two positive reviews already tell you all you need to know about the world of Guàishòu.

“The artwork is fantastic and it’s an interesting setting that it would be nice to learn more about,” Alpha Beta Gamer wrote.

“The monster designs are particularly impressive, with each one you encounter being more grotesque and terrifying than the last."

For Dreadxp, the feeling is mutual.

“Google informs me that Guàishòu 怪兽 means monster, and indeed the creatures you encounter are monstrous. Horrible amalgamations of human parts and other, the Guàishòu in Guàishòu are not unlike the thing from The Thing."

The Guàishòu demo is free to download on Steam right now ahead of its full launch some time in the future.
