A terrifying upcoming game that looks like a mix of Resident Evil and Dead Space now has a free demo, and it looks like a great thing for VR players to check out.

Steam Next Fest might be over, but that doesn’t mean the demos have stopped coming. If you’re in the mood for some virtual reality spooks, be sure to check out Dread Meridian’s free demo.

It’s an upcoming horror game made for VR in which you play as Daniela, a researcher who goes to a remote arctic island known as Oglanbyen in a desperate search for her missing twin sister, Isabella.

The game has scavenging mechanics, in which you need to find resources to survive, all while solving puzzles and battling horrific creatures.

“Test your wits against the twisted creatures that stalk the lands. Planning is key to survival on the lost island,” reads the official description for Dread Meridian on Steam. “Immerse yourself in the dread-filled Oglanbyen, where you never know what could be around the next corner.”

“Scavenge ammo and supplies to survive the island's hostile inhabitants. Customise your weapon with salvaged attachments. When all else fails, rely on your trusty knife and fight to your last breath. Break into research facilities and abandoned mines to gather clues to the whereabouts of your lost sister.”

Dread Meridian also includes a content warning for “content not appropriate for all ages, or may not be appropriate for viewing at work: Frequent Violence or Gore, General Mature Content”.

Well, considering this is a VR game, I’d imagine this won’t be for the faint of heart at all.

Judging from screenshots, and what’s been seen in the demo so far, the Resident Evil parallels are quite clear. We can also see bits of Dead Space and the Stalker series too. I’d imagine there’s quite a lot of different horror inspirations happening here.

Dread Meridian doesn’t have a release date for the full version yet. The demo is available on Steam right now, where you can download it and play it using a compatible VR headset.

Meta Quest 2, Meta Quest 3, and Index are cited as compatible headsets for now, so you might experience iffy results using other headsets such as the PlayStation VR2 or HTC Vive.

Still, that’s what the demo is for, right? To test it out and see if it’ll run on your hardware.
