To absolutely no one’s surprise, Baldur’s Gate 3 was the most successful Steam game of 2023.

To absolutely no one’s surprise, Baldur’s Gate 3 was the most successful Steam game of 2023.

The Larian Studios RPG impressed fans and critics alike with its expertly written story, as well as intense combat. The whole game is a giant, virtual Dungeons & Dragons experience that you can even play with friends, so it’s no wonder it’s been a smash-hit.

Aside from being well-received, it’s also made a lot of money. Since its PC release in August 2023, Baldur’s Gate 3 made a grand total of $657 million on Steam, making it the store’s best-seller amidst steep competition from Hogwarts Legacy and Starfield.

That’s no small feat, especially when you realise Hogwarts Legacy was the overall best-selling game of the year. To be fair though, the Harry Potter game was released on just about every platform available, whereas Baldur’s Gate 3 only released on PC and new-gen consoles, the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S.

Nevertheless it's a colossal success for the game and one that’s well deserved when you realise just how much love and effort went into its design.

When you look past the never-ending amount of in-game smut options, which for many was the sole reason to buy the game, you’ll see at its core it’s just a perfect RPG experience, and one players will likely stick with for many years to come.

Larian Studios hasn’t confirmed if DLC expansions are in the works, but it has said they’re being considered following the game’s success.

Let’s be real, it’d be a no-brainer from a gameplay and finance perspective. Expansions adding a new area, quests and characters would sell like hot cakes on all platforms and since it’ll likely be a few years till we get Baldur's Gate 4 it’d be the perfect option to tide us over till a new game.

Whether it's on the cards is another question, but for now let’s just celebrate the game’s success and hope it passes many more milestones in 2024.
