Pokémon fans heartbroken as beloved game quietly shut down in select countries

Pokémon fans heartbroken as beloved game quietly shut down in select countries

Can't save them all

The popular Pokémon game Pokémon Unite is to be shut down next month in specific countries.

If you haven’t played or heard of it, Pokémon Unite is a MOBA that’s very different to the RPGs the series is best-known for.

Take a look at the game below

Players can choose from a range of different Pokémon and take part in team-based battles such as capturing objectives, with each match rewarding in-game currency to be exchanged for all sorts of goodies.

It’s very popular and even has a tournament scene for the more competitive players, though unfortunately next month there are going to be some big changes depending on where you live.

From 31 October onwards, it’ll no longer be possible to register for a Pokémon Unite account, nor will it be possible to renew your membership for the game if you live in the Netherlands or Belgium.

You also won’t be able to purchase Aeos gems, an in-game currency that could act as a timesaver as well be used to buy exclusive rewards.

The game will eventually become unplayable in its entirely on 30 November 2025 for those regions.

Now it’s not uncommon for games like this to be whisked away when their time comes, though I don’t think anyone was expecting a title linked to the Pokémon series to go so soon, even if it wasn’t a mainline entry. Support for the game will continue in other countries though.

Bad luck if you live in the Netherlands or Belgium, though there are other games to take its place like the new TGC mobile game if you haven’t seen that already.

As for console Pokémon games, the next one will be Pokémon Legends: Z-A which will likely be a launch title for the Nintendo Switch 2, though likely work on the Nintendo Switch as well.
