PlayStation is getting a new entry in a classic stealth RPG series next month, and consider me hyped.
It’s always a shame when one of your favourite game franchises goes dormant. Splinter Cell fans, you know what I’m talking about, right?
One minute you’ll be getting new game after new game, and then suddenly nothing. For fans of that particular series, it can sting a little to go years without a new entry.
I certainly feel this way about Thief, a series that hasn’t had a new game in so long that I wouldn’t blame a lot of people for forgetting it exists.

It’s been so long since we last had a Thief game, and even longer since we had a good one, and that’s a shame as the original trilogy is perhaps some of the finest stealth games to have ever been made.
Lucky for Thief fans, the series is making an official return next month after 12 years since the last installment. And from what we’ve seen so far, it looks incredible.
Thief VR: Legacy of Shadow is launching next month. It’s a brand new game in the series, rather than a remaster or remake that’s been ported to VR.

What is Thief VR: Legacy of Shadow about?
The game is set a number of years after the events of the previous games, and features a new protagonist, a young girl named Magpie. She gets ahold of Garrett’s mechanical eye, and steps into the role of a Master Thief just as the eye’s previous owners did.

“Every great Thief game includes an array of tools and challenges that naturally encourage avoiding combat using stealth, numerous solutions to any problem, and requiring close attention to your surroundings using all senses,” reads a PlayStation Blog post regarding the upcoming game.
“It can be challenging at first, but taking your time can make it feel incredibly rewarding. Levels are fairly open and non-linear to support player agency—a trademark of the immersive sim genre. Allowing players to do what they want, not what they’re told, says Steven, is a staple in allowing their own unique narrative to emerge.
Thief VR: Legacy of Shadow releases on PlayStation VR2 on 4th December, 2025. It’s also coming to Meta Quest devices and Steam VR as well, with support for Valve Index, Meta Rift, Meta Quest 2, Meta Quest 3 Family.
Hopefully, if it does well, it might mean more Thief games coming out in the future. I'm personally hoping Nightdive attempts a remaster of the original trilogy, but that could just be wishful thinking.
