The Last of Us fans are pretty torn on where a third game could take the story, as well as where it would be set.

After two award-winning games and a popular HBO television adaptation, the future of The Last of Us is still up in the air.

Series co-creator Neil Druckmann has spoken many times about the potential of a third game, toeing back and forth between confirming it’ll happen, and there's doubt it ever will come into being.

Meanwhile, The Last of Us fans have their own theories and ideas about where Part 3 could go, and it’s leaving them a little torn.

“People have said, and I agree with this too, is that the third part should be a sort of redemption for Ellie and her journey to rekindle the old her before tragedy,” reads a post on The Last of Us’ Reddit page.

“But what would that plot now entail? That's a concept of the theme of the story but not the actual plot itself. The only thing that pops into my mind would be for Ellie to try to make another journey to find someone who can make a vaccine but I don't know if I like that decision either.”

However, some believe that it doesn’t necessarily have to be a sequel set after the second game, but rather a prequel that tells the events leading up to the 20 Years Later segment of the first.

“First, Ellie not having a resolution at the end of PtII is a good call,” reads a post in the thread. “Not everything needs a happy ending. That was kinda the point of the whole game. Having said that, I think a Joel story after Sarah's death, to when we find him with Tess at the start of Pt 1. That would be a brutal game.”

“I don’t think everything needs a prequel,” a reply reads underneath. “We already know where Joel ends up and all the major events that led him there. Prequels like Better Call Saul are great because they provide new character development on underdeveloped characters that expands the story.”

I certainly agree with that. There isn’t really much wiggle room for a Joel prequel.

Now, you take a less developed character from The Last of Us like Tess, Marlene, or Bill, and you might have a better hook there.
