Sony are cooking up a massive update that should bring a host of overhauls to the visual capabilities of the PlayStation 5 Pro console, according to a new rumour.

The PlayStation 5 Pro has become known as the gold standard in console gaming, and with the introduction of PSSR, the hardware can output at higher resolutions with greater detail.

The PlayStation 5 Pro could be getting better very soon

As reported by TechRadar, transcribing from Moore’s Law is Dead, Sony is currently working on an upgraded version of PSSR that is so dramatically upgraded that it could be rebranded to PSSR 2.

Apparently, the update will give developers significantly more resources to drop the resolutions of their games to boost overall performance, while the improved version of PSSR works on the image quality.

Moreover, PSSR 2 would be able to consistently target 4K resolutions running at 120fps, with the possible reach to 8K resolution running at 60fps, which would be a vast leap for the hardware.

PlayStation 5 Pro owners are already in love with their consoles as we’ve seen recent games looking stunning, so the idea that Sony could push this further, without a hardware refresh is exciting.

This also points to possible improvements coming for the next generation of PlayStation, as any tweaks and changes will be baked into the PlayStation 6.

The PlayStation 5 will become a testing ground for PSSR and any AI upscaling technologies moving forward, with the hope that console gamers can get the very best visual enjoyment from the newest games.

Of course, this is merely a rumour, at the moment, so take it with a pinch of salt, however, it’s safe to say Sony will continue to work on PSSR upgrades.

Would a further improvement lead to an uptick in sales from those who were sceptical of any supposed small increase? It’s hard to say.
