PlayStation Will Let You Play PS5 Games Without Main Console, How it Works

PS5 games in the palm of your hand, with no home console or even a PC required

Sony is about to release a new feature that will allow users to play PlayStation titles wherever they want, without the use of a PlayStation 5 or a PC.

Hard to believe, but it would seem that Sony just accidentally leaked that they’ll be introducing a new feature in the not-so-distant future that will let you play PlayStation 5 games… without a PlayStation 5.

And no, before you ask, we’re not referring to the PlayStation Plus Premium streaming service on PC– but that’s not entirely far off the mark.

As spotted by one eagle-eyed user over on Reddit, it would seem that Sony has accidentally given away details regarding a future PlayStation Portal update a little too early.

As the user notes, a since-deleted line on the PlayStation Store page for the Dead Space remake stated that PlayStation Portal owners will be able to "buy this game, and then stream and play instantly on PS Portal or PS5".

Since then, folks over on ResetEra spotted that the same line popped up on (and was subsequently removed from) other titles on the PlayStation Store, including Microsoft’s The Outer Worlds 2.

In case you were curious as to how this is news, considering it has been possible to stream selected PlayStation Plus Premium titles to a PlayStation Portal for a while now, the important part of the leak is the part where it specifically states that users can play a game once they “buy” it, on a PS Portal OR a PS5.

Essentially, provided this isn’t some huge oversight on Sony’s behalf, this is big news for two reasons. Firstly, this means that any game you own on your PlayStation account can be streamed to your PlayStation Portal, not just the select titles in the PlayStation Plus Premium library.

Secondly, and perhaps more importantly, it should also mean that you don’t even need access to a PlayStation 5 to do so, as you currently need to stream your games directly from your PlayStation 5 to your PlayStation Portal.

Even better still, this also means that you can use a PlayStation 5 and a PlayStation Portal independently of one another, allowing two people to play a different game at the same time.

Considering how fresh this leak is, there’s obviously not any direct word from Sony on when this will go into effect. However, considering it was leaked from PlayStation Store listings, I wouldn’t be surprised if Sony rolls out the new feature in a matter of days.
