Several classic PlayStation titles such as Ape Escape and Infamous have been teased to return, and older Sony fans are having a field day.

Just looking at the number of original IPs which were on the Sony PlayStation and PlayStation 2, there are a huge number of older franchises that would be ripe for a new modern-gen remaster, reboot, or sequel.

Following recent rumours regarding Sony’s interest in bringing back some of these older intellectual properties, one source has confirmed that there is some truth to it.

Over on X (formerly Twitter), industry insider NateTheHate2 said that “there is truth to Sony exploring & considering reviving some of their older, unused IPs.”

This is in reference to comments by Video Games Chronicle’s Jordan Middler on the VGC Podcast earlier this week, in which he referenced Ape Escape, Infamous and WipeOut as a potential franchise Sony should bring back.

While it sounds more like hopes and wishful thinking from Middler, NateTheHate2 appears to hint at some truth to these rumours.

He doesn’t have any solid information on which franchises are being considered, but NateTheHate2’s personal picks include Sly Cooper, Resistance, Legend of Dragoon, MotorStorm, Ape Escape & inFamous.

Sony Revival Could See Franchises Like Infamous, MotorStorm, And Sly Cooper Get PS5 Revivals

Indeed, the rumours have sent PlayStation fans into a frenzy, with many users online calling for the return of different franchises under Sony’s arm.

Over on Reddit, you’ll see comments in this thread calling for the return of different IPs. In addition to those listed by NateTheHate2, fans also want to see LittleBigPlanet, Jak and Daxter, and Syphon Filter make a return.

As the years go by, Sony occasionally likes to toy with bringing back a classic series for a revival to see how it does, before using sales data and public interest to determine whether more entries in that franchise should be made.

Games like Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart, Sackboy: A Big Adventure, and MediEvil are examples of revival attempts by Sony to bring games from its PS1, PS2, and PS3 era into the modern generation.

However, with there still being so many underutilised IPs under Sony’s belt, there are still a lot of untapped material that the publisher and console manufacturer has yet to bring back for a modern revival.

With how long games take to make nowadays, it makes sense that Sony would want to diversify its portfolio with smaller games which can be made quicker and on a smaller budget.

Between big sequels for franchises like Horizon, Ghost, God of War and Spider-Man, it works out well to release remasters or sequels to some games in Sony's older library of titles.
