PlayStation Plus users are being urged to cancel their subscriptions to avoid confusion with a certain setting on PlayStation consoles.

PlayStation Plus has been around since 2010, and in that time it’s seen some significant changes.

Even if you’re a fan of the service, it’s understandable that sometimes you might want to take a break from PlayStation Plus, letting your remaining subscription run out without auto-renewing.

For some, cancelling PlayStation Plus is easier said than done though. And it’s down to a confusing setting on your PlayStation console that is a cause for confusion.

Up until last year, PlayStation users who wished to cancel PS Plus at the end of their subscription period could go into their account settings and select the “Turn off Auto Renew” option.

This meant that after the final day of PS Plus that you paid for, you would no longer be an active subscriber. It’s handy if you’re thinking of taking a break and were scared of forgetting to cancel it when it ran out.

For whatever reason, the “Turn off Auto Renew” setting has now changed to “Cancel Subscription”, but don’t worry. Functionally, it’s the same thing.

If you select Cancel Subscription, it’ll run until the last day you’re subscribed for and then cancel itself. You won’t need to worry about losing any time you’ve already paid for.

PlayStation Plus user avidmar1978 stressed this on the PS Plus Reddit page, writing: “It's 5 posts every day in here... ‘Sony charged me even though auto renew is off’. If you don't press the CANCEL button, your sub will renew. It's that simple.”

As for why Sony made the change to the wording, the most likely reason is “Cancel Subscription” might deter you from cancelling because you may think you’ll lose access immediately.

That’s even if you still have some time racked up on your subscription. It’s purely psychological.

But still, if you’re wanting to cancel your PlayStation Plus subscription, selecting “Cancel Subscription” is all you need to do.
