PlayStation Plus drops must-play RPG for Legend of Zelda gamers

PlayStation Plus has dropped a fantastic, underrated gem that will surely please fans of the classic The Legend of Zelda series and RPG fans alike.

Without question, created by legendary Nintendo developers Shigeru Miyamoto and Takashi Tezuka, The Legend of Zelda series is one of the most popular video game franchises of all time, ever since it made its debut on the NES in 1986 and has continued to not only grow over the years, but it has also inspired generation after generation.

In particular, the indie gaming scene continues to be inspired by The Legend of Zelda, as we’ve seen with critically acclaimed bangers such as Unsighted, Death’s Door, Tunic and much more.

However, there is another game, and that’s CrossCode, which more than likely has flown under many radars ever since it originally launched in 2018 on PC, before arriving on consoles in the years that followed. Well, CrossCode is now available on PlayStation Plus Essential, so if you’ve never played this game, now is your chance.

What is CrossCode?

Developed by Radical Fish Games, CrossCode is an action RPG inspired by the SNES era, which just so happens to be the console that gave us one of the best The Legend of Zelda games of all time, A Link to the Past.

“You get the puzzles of Zelda-esque dungeons and are rewarded with the great variety of equipment you know and love from RPGs,” reads the description of the game.

“During the fast-paced battles, you will use the tools you find on your journey to reveal and exploit the enemies' weaknesses, and at the same time, you will be able to choose equipment and skills for a more in-depth approach in fighting your enemies.”

What does the community say about CrossCode?

On the aggregate score website Metacritic, CrossCode has earned respectable scores of 82 from critics and 8.0 from users. On the PC platform Steam, it’s rated as “Very Positive” from over 10,000 user reviews. As for the PlayStation Store, it’s scored four out of five stars.

“This game is one of a kind on so many levels,” said Brian on Steam. “The whole quality is amazing. I didn't encounter a single bug, and I played a lot. The graphics are top-notch. The story is interesting and rather unpredictable."

“I don't know how this one flew under my radar for eight years. I only learned about it after seeing Alabaster Dawn being announced, then I looked into the studio, but this is easily now one of my favourite games ever,” exclaimed Bones.

“A true gem with old school sensibilities mixed with new tech and a new take on isometric platforming in general. It's a game that embodies the spirit of those early action-adventure games and forges its own frontier with it. Surprisingly, with some highly effective storytelling too,” wrote Ad Massive.

How long is CrossCode on PS Plus?

Unlike games included in the PlayStation Plus Extra and Premium tiers, which rotate to make way for something new, when PS Plus Essential games are added to your library, they typically stick around for good, as long as you have an active subscription to access them.
