Sony has confirmed the fate of the PlayStation 4 as the PS5 nears its end of the current generation.
The PlayStation 4 has had a very strong run since it arrived in 2013. It delivered some of the best games of its generation, including Bloodborne, Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End, Marvel’s Spider-Man, Ghost of Tsushima, The Last of Us Part II and more.
However, good things can’t always last forever, and the PlayStation 4 is no exception. Much like the generations that came before, at some point, the PS4 will stop receiving support, but you might be pleased to know that won’t be happening anytime soon, it seems.

As reported by TweakTown, in a recent business strategy briefing, Sony declared that the PlayStation 4 is still an important member of its ecosystem due to retaining an “active and spending” player base across its network.
“I'd like to re-emphasise that our financial profile as a business has evolved in line with our strategy,” said SVP of Finance at PlayStation, Lynn Azar.
“We've reduced traditional cyclicality by establishing a large ecosystem of players across both the PS5 and PS4 generations, which provides recurring revenues.”
“PS5 represents the most engaged players with the highest spend per player versus prior generations. But our PS4 players are still active and spending as well,” she continued.

"So by providing players with increasing options of how to access the platform, we're able to better target different play patterns and monetisation profiles of different customer segments.”
“As we continue to drive a multi-generational ecosystem into the future, we'll provide new ways for players to access the platform and experience our content and services.”
How long the PlayStation 4 will keep going not only depends on the official support from Sony, but also from third-party publishers and developers.
I’d be pleasantly surprised if the PS4 was still going strong after a couple more years, especially with the PS6 looking, but it’s nice to know that there’s still a bit more fight left in the popular system yet.
