Sony PlayStation has confirmed two major new PS5 releases, including a stunning new console and something special for one of its most iconic gaming franchises. However, both come with an annoying catch that could leave many gamers disappointed.
The first new release announcement is for a stunning Midnight Black PS5 digital console that’s also being accompanied by a matching Midnight Black disc drive as an optional purchase.
The second new announcement is for a highly detailed Collector’s Edition for the highly anticipated God of War Laufey, which is set to be released exclusively on PlayStation 5 in February 2027. Sadly, there is a major factor in this physical release that won’t please fans of the series either.
What’s the catch with the new Midnight Black PS5?

As reported by Gematsu, the Midnight Black PS5 and its accompanying disc drive will be exclusive to Japan, launching on November 19, 2026, for ¥55,000 (around $350/£262). As we all know, if this console were to launch in the US or UK, there's no way it would be that cheap. Pre-orders are set to open on October 20.

What’s more, just like a previous Japan-exclusive PlayStation 5 console, its language will be locked to Japanese and can only be used with Japanese-registered PSN accounts. So if you imported this console, it's most likely that you won't be able to play it, unless you meet the restricted criteria.
As for the standalone Midnight Black disc drive, that has an RRP of ¥11,980, which works out to be around $76/£57. Again, there’s no way the price would be that low if it sold in the US and UK.
The irony of Sony's new PS5 disc drive
The irony of Sony PlayStation selling a brand new PS5 disc drive follows its announcement that, as of January 2028, it will no longer be selling its games on disc as the company aggressively switches to an all-digital future. At the time of writing, it doesn't look likely that Sony has any intention of making a consumer-friendly and dramatic U-turn.
Thankfully, there is some positive news if you really wanted to purchase that Midnight Black PS5 console. You can purchase the official Midnight Black console cover directly from PlayStation for $54/£44.99. There are also many other colours and styles available. However, it’s only available for the slim console.
What's the catch with the new God of War Laufey announcement?
Announced on the official Sony PlayStation España X account, God of War Laufey is getting a gorgeous Collector’s Box ahead of its launch next year. Note the words “Collector’s Box”.
Yes, you’ve guessed it. This God of War Laufey Collector’s Box doesn’t come with a physical copy of the game. Hang on a second... *checks notes*. It doesn’t come with a copy of the game at all, physical or digital.
What’s included in the God of War Laufey Collector’s Box?
- A light-up statue of Faye
- A deck of 51 Oracle cards
- A mini art book

To be fair, the statue is really cool, and if you already own the God of War (2018) and God of War Ragnarök Collector’s Editions, Faye (Laufey) will look awesome alongside them.
The set is available to order on PlayStation Direct UK for £129.99.
God of War Laufey will be released on February 16, 2027.
