PlayStation revives hit PS2 game, free on PS Plus now

This PS2 classic has been revived for current-gen systems... again.

A classic PlayStation 2 title is now back on current-gen systems… again. We’ll get into it, but the important news is that this 2003 PS2 banger is now available to download for free if you’re a PlayStation Plus subscriber.

Thank you in advance to Push Square's Liam Croft for the original source!

As of today, six new games are available to download through PlayStation Plus (depending on what subscription tier you pay for).

For PlayStation Plus Extra users, you get Hogwarts Legacy, Lost Records: Bloom & Rage - Tape 2, PlateUp!, and Battlefield 1.

However, it's the PlayStation Plus Premium titles we're interested in today, because you lot are getting the PS1 title Alone in the Dark 2 and the PS2 banger War of the Monsters.

The ever-so-slightly confusing thing is that War of the Monsters is actually a re-release of sorts. It’s not a case of the game now just being available through PlayStation Plus, but rather that this is a new version of the same game.

Those of you who keep up to date with which PS1 and PS2 classics make their way to PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 might be a little bemused by this, because War of the Monsters was already re-released for PlayStation 4 a while back… so why are they re-releasing (re-re-releasing?) it again?

Well, this version of War of the Monsters has been updated a little to be more compatible with the PlayStation 5. Alongside some newly added trophy support, you can play this version of the game through PlayStation’s brand-new emulator.

This means that you can now use PlayStation 5-specific functions in-game, like, for instance, the rewind feature. It also means it should just perform a little better, although I’ve not been able to verify if that’s actually true yet.

Basically, it’s just a somewhat improved version. If you’ve yet to give War of the Monsters a go for yourself, I highly recommend it; although it’s best played with a friend.
