PlayStation Drops New Free RPG, No PS Plus Required

Dragon Ball for all

Bandai Namco have dropped a free game on both the PlayStation 4 and 5, and not only is it absolutely free, it's also very good by all accounts.

Dragon Ball Gekishin Squadra is a 4v4 multiplayer action game, where you pick your hero before each game to take advantage of their unique ability sets.

The official overview for the game from the developer reads as follows, "Enter the world of Dragon Ball by bringing your favourite characters’ earth-shaking strength to the battlefield, and join up with your friends and allies to defeat your opponents and dominate the objectives. Grow your strength throughout each round, unlock game-changing attacks and abilities, and obliterate enemy players and bosses alike.”

The basic gameplay loop sees players take on another team of four to take on the enemy in the lanes the game provides. From there, you'll need to beat up the enemy and steal their Dragon Ball.

Whilst the game won't have the story elements that make a lot of the single-player Dragon Ball games so appealing, there are some nice character features that should provide entertainment as you play.

When on the same team, the characters you have all chosen will interact with one another, and that will change depending on their traditional relationships with one another. For example, if you pair up Goku and Vegeta, they will endlessly argue about the best way to do things.

Gekishin Squadra also features three distinct roles that should be familiar to players of games like Overwatch and Marvel Rivals.

The first is outright Damage that focuses on hyper-aggressive playstyles. Tanks are in charge of soaking up damage, leading from the frontline and outputting crowd control, whilst Technical characters serve as supports of sort, boosting allied damage and reducing incoming damage from enemies.

There are 17 characters to choose from at the time of writing, with more on the way at some point (the developer hasn't been forthcoming with dates for those). Whilst it doesn't necessarily have the intense competitiveness that some expect from a MOBA, it's actually a nice change of pace that treads the line well between casual enjoyment and hype multiplayer gameplay.

Developed by Ganbarion, the game currently sits on a genuinely impressive 4.38/5 stars based on more than 6,000 verified ratings. In even better news it's totally free, and in a nice change of pace, you don't even need PS Plus to get it downloaded.
