Sony just dropped a free download for their latest Sony Interactive Entertainment published game, and, to put it lightly, it’s not looking particularly great.
Back in 2016, following the sales ban of video game consoles in China being lifted in 2014, Sony announced the PlayStation China Hero Project.
In short, the China Hero Project is Sony’s attempt at revitalising (or, perhaps, “starting” would be the better word) the Chinese video game development scene.
One of the first games to join the project was Lost Soul Aside, a hack and slash RPG for the PlayStation 5 developed by Ultizero Games. After running into some development delays (mostly due to COVID), the team finally released some trailers for the game, and it looked pretty cool.

And since then, I can’t remember hearing about Lost Soul Aside a single time until today… on the day of the game’s official release.
Part of the reason I likely forgot that this game was even coming out is due to the fact that Sony refused to provide review outlets with codes for the game, prior to the release. Apparently this was due to the game requiring a hefty day one patch, but I think that’s a pretty weak excuse.
Also, it’s likely complete nonsense, because the day one patch is here and the game is getting ripped to shreds online.
To be fair, most of the criticism stems from the PC port of Lost Soul Aside on Steam, because performance is apparently very, very rough (which is likely why it’s currently sitting at a “Mixed” score on Steam, with only 56% of the reviews being positive).

If you fancy taking a swing at this one in its current state, then there is a demo for you to try on PlayStation 5. The demo has a 4.07 out of 5 star rating as of writing, but that shouldn’t come as too much of a surprise.
Demos offer players a slice of the gameplay in the hope that it will convince them to purchase the full game, so it’s not going to be indicative of the full game’s quality. The gameplay issues that players are running into with the full release likely don’t exist in the demo version of Lost Soul Aside, so don’t get fooled into going all in on the full game just because the morsel of gameplay they offer you in the demo seems fun.
Hopefully the devs can fix the performance issues, but aside from that, I’d suggest waiting for some comprehensive reviews on this one before buying it. Never trust a game that didn’t send out review codes.
Well… unless that game is Hollow Knight: Silksong.
