PlayStation 5 confirms return of highly requested feature

They will be back

A popular PlayStation 5 feature is leaving us, but never fear. To paraphrase the great Arnold Schwarzenegger, it will be back.

Besides having many great video games to play, one of my favourite features of the PlayStation 3 was its dynamic themes. To this day, my PS3 still has the awesome Resident Evil: Operation Raccoon City theme, with the menacing Licker on top of a burning RPD car.

Check out the Horizon Zero Dawn Remastered trailer below!

When the PlayStation 4 arrived in 2013, it took dynamic themes to the next level, making them even more visually impressive, so it was a mystery to many that the PlayStation 5 did not launch with dynamic themes that represented our favourite games.

Thankfully, towards the end of 2024, dynamic themes were introduced to the PlayStation 5. Granted, the choice was limited but it was a step in the right direction nonetheless.

What’s more, to celebrate the 30th anniversary of PlayStation, dynamic themes inspired by the PS1, PS2, PS3 and PS4 arrived on the PS5. However, for whatever reason, Sony decided that these nostalgic dynamic themes were only to be available for a limited time, which puzzled fans.

Those nostalgic PS5 themes are leaving today but Sony has confirmed that they will be returning and this time, hopefully, they’ll be permanent.

“Thank you for the fantastic response to the classic PlayStation, PS2, PS3, and PS4 limited-time console themes, which will be leaving tomorrow,” tweeted PlayStation on 30 January 2025. “Due to the positive response to these four themes, we’re doing some work behind the scenes to bring these special designs back in the months ahead.”

While this is welcomed news, fans were likely hoping to see additional themes added alongside those returning. Sadly, at this time, that prospect is looking somewhat unlikely.

“While there aren’t plans to create additional themes in the future, we're excited to keep celebrating legacy PlayStation hardware with you all,” tweeted the account in response to fans.

One of my favourite perks of buying a special or collector’s edition of a game is that at least on PS4, they sometimes came with an exclusive dynamic theme - not to mention those that were available to buy on the previous generations' storefronts.

Hopefully, in the coming months, Sony will bring back dynamic themes on PlayStation 5 in a big way and not just those that celebrated the 30th anniversary of its first console.

We’ll keep you posted when we hear further developments on this story.
