If you’re a PlayStation 4 gamer, you might want to brace yourself for 26 June.

The PlayStation 4 has a massive library of games. And with over 100 million units sold, it’s clear that the number of people playing on these consoles is still significant.

Despite the PS5 also having a large number of players, there’s still quite a lot of people who haven’t made the jump to the current generation. Those digital boxes can be quite expensive, after all.

Ghost of Yōtei is launching on PlayStation later this year.

So, it’s a shame when a game stops being supported for older generation hardware in favour of the new.

This is the case with Black Desert, which will be sunsetting its PS4 and Xbox One versions on 26 June, 2025.

Developer Pearl Abyss has announced it will be removing the last-gen versions of Black Desert for sale, while simultaneously launching current-gen versions. These new versions of the game will be a free upgrade to current owners.

What’s more is game data and purchased items will also be transferred, so those who have sunk a lot of time into the last-gen version on PS4 will be able to pick up where they left off on PS5.

Black Desert: Traveler Edition was offered as a PlayStation Plus Essential game in September 2023. It’s currently unknown if this version of the game specifically is eligible for a PS5 upgrade, but we’d have to assume so.

The new version will also have extra content to bring it up on par with the PC version, as well as performance and stability improvements. Being on mightier hardware will do that.

As time goes on, we can’t help but wonder if this phenomenon will continue to happen for many last-gen multiplayer titles.

Games like Fallout 76, Final Fantasy 14, and Fortnite could also receive the same treatment eventually, where the older versions are slowly retired in favour of current-gen versions.

If you’re a Black Desert player but haven’t yet managed to secure a PS5, you’ll have until 26 June to do so.
